Hired Hands - Hands of Time

The new CD from Hired Hands is a far-ranging and fairly adventurous collection of material indicative of Hired Hands' wide breadth of influences and depth of repertoire. As in the other HH CDs, there are strikingly beautiful and moving ballads and waltzes, haunting minor key moody pieces, hot-pickin' numbers, and great two-stepping songs as well.

Thanks as always to our families, friends, and fans for all that you do.

One Sunday in May I listened to this for the first time. The door was wide open, sun streaming in, and kittens were attacking my bare toes. A lot of kittens.  While listening, I realized that in all the years I’ve known Hired Hands, I’ve never heard them in daylight or truly outdoors—yet they bring to mind not only woodsmoke, frost, full moons, rain clouds, and the dust of dance floors since replaced; but also, warm breezes, meadowlarks and the highway shimmering into the distance.   That is, the music doesn’t just remind my experiences to me, but also theirs. It can tell me things I don’t already know.

Their last album’s liner notes were about time and essence.  This time the songs are—time and essences and that great tree which in reaching from earth to sky also reaches from past to future, providing a link between and a roost for eagles.  Works for me.

 About the cover image –

This image is taken from a painting by Alamosa, Colorado artist Dave Montgomery. Dave did this painting of a petroglyph on the west edge of the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado. The petroglyph has been called “The Juggler” because of his oversized hands (with thumbs both facing the same direction) and the thirteen orbs chiseled into the rock above him. Dave can be reached at 719-589-5417 or at 0240 Sunnyside Ln, Alamosa CO 81101.

Hired Hands - Stuff That Works

The second CD from Hired Hands is a highly acclaimed work that beautifully displays their strong vocals, great acoustic picking, and their impeccable choice of material. This was the first release from this lineup of Hired Hands with Eddy Lee on vocals and guitar, Jim Bradley on bass and vocals, and Don Richmond on vocals, guitar, banjo, mandolin, and fiddle (with a little harp, dobro, and steel thrown in). Also appearing on the CD are fiddler extraordinaire Gordon Burt, former HH member Billy Bond, Jr. on dobro, and Don’s big brother Diamond Jim Richmond, also on dobro.

About the audio clips -I've replaced the Realaudio files with MP3 clips at  56 k resolution. This is described as "FM radio quality". They are quicker to download than the 128 k "CD quality" bit depth files and still sound pretty good. Let me know what you think at donrichmond@worldnet.att.net . Thanks!

(Download free RealAudio G2 player software at RealNetworks - The Home of Streaming Media - it will play MP3 files, too, or go to www.xingtech.com for my favorite MP3 player and software.)
